Description

The training titled Fluids II: Pharmacology of Intravenous Fluids and Perioperative Fluid Balance focused on the pharmacology, classification, characteristics, indications, advantages, disadvantages, and clinical application of intravenous (IV) fluids in perioperative care. The session reviewed body fluid physiology, fluid compartments, crystalloid and colloid solutions, fluid distribution, pharmacokinetics of common IV fluids, assessment of hydration and intravascular volume status, and principles of perioperative fluid management. It also covered fluid replacement strategies, management of preoperative and intraoperative losses, monitoring adequacy of fluid therapy, and the comparison between liberal and restrictive fluid administration approaches.

Objectives

Link the physiology of body fluids with commonly used intravenous fluids. Understand the composition and characteristics of commonly used replacement fluids. Examine the factors that determine perioperative fluid replacement requirements. Learn methods for monitoring the adequacy of perioperative fluid replacement. Compare liberal versus conservative fluid replacement therapy and their clinical implications.
