Description
This journal club/CME presentation reviewed a randomized clinical trial comparing video laryngoscopy (VL) and direct laryngoscopy (DL) for endotracheal intubation in patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. The session critically appraised the study methodology, population, outcomes, strengths, limitations, and clinical implications of using video laryngoscopy to improve intubation success rates in the operating room.
Objectives
Understand the role of endotracheal intubation in anaesthesia and recognize complications associated with multiple intubation attempts.
Compare the effectiveness of video laryngoscopy and direct laryngoscopy in achieving successful endotracheal intubation in surgical patients.
Describe the design and methodology of a cluster randomized multiple cross-over clinical trial.
Interpret the primary and secondary outcomes of the trial, including intubation attempts, intubation failure rates, and airway or dental injury.
Critically appraise a randomized controlled trial using evidence-based medicine principles, including assessment of randomization, bias, validity, and applicability of results.
Evaluate the strengths, limitations, and potential sources of bias within clinical airway management research.
Apply evidence from the study to clinical decision-making regarding airway management in high-acuity surgical patients.
